SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday and Sunday\, March 29-30\, 2025\nWhere: Ozark Natural Science Center-Lake Fayetteville Campus \nThis two-day course immerses participants in essential wilderness medicine procedures\, preparing individuals to take immediate action when an outdoor activity doesn’t go as planned and 911 responders are hours away. Time is split between interactive classroom sessions and hands-on field scenarios to prepare participants and help them quickly develop basic backcountry medical care skills. The course focus is on patient assessment\, stabilization and emergency treatment of issues such as hypothermia and snakebites\, as well as understanding when and how to attempt evacuation. Participants will emerge capable of calmly responding to a wide variety of emergency situations. \nThis course will be taught by Tom Burroughs\, who is the head of the Washington County AR Search and Rescue team. Tom has been an emergency responder since 1990 and is an NREMT/WEMT and WildMed Instructor Trainer. Tom brings a background of many years of backcountry rescue experience and has been teaching these courses since 2006. \nAll participants will need to be dressed in clothing that can be stained and/or damaged\, as the program is heavily hands on\, and moulage will be used to promote training authenticity. \nParticipants will need to be prepared to be outside for many of the training hours\, regardless of weather conditions\, unless hazardous (storms or extreme heat or cold). Participants should bring whatever items they commonly carry on their persons in the performance of their duties\, as improvisational concepts are an important aspect of this course. \nAll program supplies and a waterproof field guide which becomes property of the participant\, provided by Ozark Safety and Rescue Educators (OSRE) as part of the program cost. \nSuccessful completion of the entire program will result in a three year nationally recognized Wilderness First Aid Certification through Sierra Rescue International\, and meets the requirements of BSA\, NICA\,and the American Camp Association for Wilderness First Aid Training. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:March 15 Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday March 15\, the OHTA will have a trail day to address 4 problem areas that we consistently get reports on.  Most of this work involves improving the tread on the trail\, especially side hilling (Pulaski work). \nThere will be an “OHTA leader” for each of these excursions- The OHTA will provide all the tools needed for the day.  Please bring work gloves\, plenty of water\, snacks and lunch.  Each participant will also receive a special OHTA T-shirt. \nFor each area\, we will need 6-8 volunteers. Once that is finalized\, we will send you more information about the group\, meeting location\, and time. \nFor each of these areas\, there will not be a lot of hiking involved\, maybe about a half mile to 1 mile hike into the area that needs to be repaired. \nBelow are the areas on the OHT that need special help. Please click on the link of the location to sign up. More information will be sent later. \nChancel – mm 118 (side hilling\, 2 tree rootballs) \nChancel/Boss Hollow – mm 121.5 (side hilling) \nRichland Creek area – mm 141-142 (side hilling) \nRed Bluff Road to East (Buffalo River area) – mm 190 (side hilling) \n  \nAny questions\, please contact Chris Adams (ohtmaintenance@gmail.com).

SUMMARY:Hare Mountain Hike-In
DESCRIPTION:Hare Mountain Hike-In \nLocation: Hare Mountain \nSaturday November 2\nSunday November 3 \nWhat’s so special about those two days? Well\, the 2nd and 3rd of November are when the celebration extraordinaire of OHTA’s 43rd birthday will take place atop Hare Mountain! Remember\, this is not a catered event\, so be sure to bring whatever gourmet dish you choose to create for the potluck feast on Saturday evening. Also\, this is not an RSVP thing because there is room galore up there for your luxury tent suite. And if you do not want to haul water up the trail to the top\, there is an old water well near where we’ll be camping. Of course\, if you choose that source for your drinking pleasure\, don’t forget to bring some means of purification with you—you’ll be glad you did! \nIf you want to be a part of 2024’s special occasion\, there are multiple locations from which to start your hike. However\, the spot closest to where everyone will camp on Hare Mountain is the Hare Mountain/Morgan Field Trailhead (can be located on the Ozark Highlands Trail—West map available in OHTA’s online store). From there it is a mere 1.7 mile hike to the top. \nIn addition\, presentations will be made for the winner of the Maintainer of the Year Award\, Dawna Robinson Member of the Year Award\, and the Trail Ranger Award (a lifetime achievement award). \nCome one\, come all. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce someone who is new to hiking to the spectacular beauty of the Ozark mountains and the unparalleled experience of primitive camping.

SUMMARY:West OHT Work Day
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 26 we will have a work day on the OHT. There are a couple of areas that NEED to be cleared before the Hare Mtn 100 Trail Race. Most of this damage is in the Western part of the OHT.\n\nBetween Morgan Field TH and Herrods Creek (mm44-45) there are many trees down that will take several people.\nWest Shores Lake Loop will need a full clearing job of weeds and limbs. The USFS finished sawing trees today\, but that section is not in good shape. Some of it will need to be re-blazed.\n\nThere will be a couple of other areas identified by our trail runners (scouts) before the 26th. Depending on the number of volunteers\, we can let you know where\, when\, what you are doing on Saturday the 26th. Where to meet\, who is in your group\, equipment needed will be relayed to you.\n\nClick here to go to the signup sheet. \nTo sign up\, just follow the instructions on the page. It only takes a few seconds to do.

SUMMARY:Frost Fest 2024
DESCRIPTION:Frost Fest 2024 is fast approaching\, and we have received word that it is scheduled to take place on Saturday\, February 3\, 2024\, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Fayetteville\, Arkansas. This year’s event will host over 2000 attendees\, well over 50 breweries from across the region\, food trucks\, bands and vendors for what will be a true celebration of craft beer\, art\, and community. It is important to note that Frost Fest will take place regardless of the weather. In other words\, it will not be canceled due to rain\, snow\, ice\, cold\, or shine. And remember\, it is a BYOP* happening! Tickets are already on sale\, so get yours while the gettin’ is good by clicking here. \nSo\, you may be wondering why Frost Fest is such a big deal to the OHTA? Well\, the answer is that it is an event that\, since 2016\, has been presented by Fossil Cove Brewing Company of Fayetteville. Fossil Cove views Frost Fest not just as a one-day outdoor beer festival but as a way of supporting organizations they believe make our region a better place to live. Well\, we’re very pleased that for the second year straight\, OHTA has been chosen as one of those organizations! Yes\, that means all of you who have made this organization a part of your lives have been instrumental in it becoming an organization deserving recognition! So a big THANKS goes out to all of our members! Of course\, we would be remiss to do anything less than shout out: THANK YOU FOSSIL COVE!!! \nWe hope to see you all there! \n* bring your own pretzels

SUMMARY:OHTA Aid Station @ Spirit of Syllamo 100
DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Syllamo 100 . . . what’s that?! \nWell\, the answer is very simple . . . It’s a true feat of strength and determination known by many of those who are not part of the trail running culture as pure insanity! It’s like running nearly the equivalent of four marathons back to back all on the same day (or within a 34-hour window of time)! And it is run on some of the most challenging terrain the South has to offer! Yes\, this is run not on paved streets but on trails\, and it is actually two races in one–35 and 100 miles each! \nThis year’s course begins with a 35-mile loop through the epic Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail. Those running the 100-mile race will continue on from there with an ‘Out & Back’ on the North Sylamore Creek Trail and the Ozark Highlands Trail. Runners who complete both routes are True Spirits of Syllamo!! \nSo what’s this about needing volunteers? Simply put\, Ozark Highlands Trail Association has been asked if we can come up with four to six folks–the more\, the merrier–willing to run the OHTA aid station located at the main start/finish of the race at Blanchard Springs Campground and Recreation Area. Here are some details: \n\nDay and Date: Saturday\, December 9\, 2023\nTime: approximately 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\nLocation: Blanchard Springs Campground and Recreation Area\nStart time: 6 a.m. on Saturday\, December 9\, 2023\\nCutoff time: 4 p.m. on Sunday\, December 10\, 2023\nFood and water: Supplied by the event organizers\nFree camping: For those who want to be there for the entire event\, there is free camping for all volunteers at Blanchard Springs Campground on Friday and Saturday nights. As a volunteer\, you are not obligated to stay for the entire event\, but in case you’re inspired to do so\, it will not cost you to stay.\nContact person: Tiffany Mallard — volunteers can contact her by email at tmallard52@gmail.com or by phone at (479) 461-9796\n\nIf this sounds like something of which you’d like to be a part\, then please contact Tiffany Mallard as soon as possible. It will be a fantastic way to meet some very fine individuals\, rub shoulders with some of the world’s elite long-distance trail runners\, and promote the Ozark Highlands Trail!! \nWe hope to hear from you!

SUMMARY:Group Hike on OHT Sylamore Section
DESCRIPTION:Trail:  Ozark Highlands Trail/Sylamore Section: “Grassy Hollow” to Spring Creek Trailhead\nDate: Saturday\, December 9\, 2023\nMeeting time: 9:30 a.m.  PLEASE BE PROMPT!\nMeeting place:  Intersection of Hwy 341/Push Mountain Road & Rand Road/FR 1118 (gravel). Rand Rd. is fairly close to (but across highway from) Moccasin Springs Trailhead. Pull off Hwy 341 onto Rand Rd. and wait there.  We’ll caravan to Spring Creek TH to leave some cars and then go to “Grassy Hollow” (very limited parking) to begin the hike.\nCo-Hike Leaders:  Kris McMillen and Dave Weiss\nDistance of hike: approx. 6-7 miles including about 2.5 miles “off-piste”! (Hey\, look it up—LOL!!)\nDifficulty of hike: Difficult with some bushwhacking and steep terrain\nLots of big bluffs and pretty stuff.  A good time to be in the woods!\n\nJake Anderson of Norfork Adventure Supply has kindly offered the use of the Group Campsite at Blanchard Springs Recreation area for the weekend of Dec. 9 for anyone of us to use free.  The campsite has been reserved for the trail runners who are participating in the adventure race that weekend.  I am not totally sure\, but I believe the shower house will be open for that weekend.  There are restrooms and a big pavilion.  I think it is Group Camp #1\, but either way it is the first one you come to down at Blanchard Springs camping area–the one that is by the big rock cave-looking area.  You’ll be sharing with the trail runners. If you want to use it\, just go there–no need to inform anyone ahead of time–just tell them you are with the OHTA hikers. If you have any questions\, please drop Kris an email at: krismcmillen7@gmail.com \n  \nWe will need to do a car shuttle on this hike. \nNon-aggressive dogs are OK to bring along on this hike; must be under voice control.  Some hikers don’t allow pets riding in their cars and some don’t mind\, so we’ll leave it up to you to work that out with the other hikers. \nPlease bring lunch\, water\, snacks\, hiking boots/shoes\, proper clothing for the temps.  Bring your own first aid supplies\, bug spray\, sunscreen or whatever you need for the day. \nWe are just some experienced hiking friends who are casually meeting at a trailhead to go hiking.  Hike at your own risk; everyone is responsible for their own self/well-being. No children under 15 allowed. This hike will be limited to 15 people. There will be an Ozark Highlands Trail Assoc. Liability Waiver for everyone to sign. \n  \nAFTER HIKE TAILGATE PARTY:  After the hike we will stay for a while at Spring Creek TH and have a little tailgate party.  Just bring some sort of snack (chips\, dip\, Hummus\, cookies\, whatever) to share\, and\, if you want\, a drink of your choice. You will need to put your items in the cars that are left at Spring Creek TH. \nAll hikes are weather-permitting. If you want to be a part of this hike\, please reserve your spot by emailing Kris McMillen at krismcmillen7@gmail.com or by texting her at 501-984-3774. Once you have confirmed your spot\, please be sure to check your email regularly in case there are any last minute changes. \nThis hike is very likely to fill up quickly\, so please be sure to contact Kris as soon as possible! \nOne last thing: The Spirit of Syllamo 100 is being run on December 9 on the same section of the OHT that participants in this hike will be using. Please be aware that you may encounter one or several of the  competition’s runners\, and when you do\, be sure to politely give them the right of way.

SUMMARY:2023 Hare Mountain Hike In
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Hare Mountain Hike In\, a celebration to commemorate the 1981 birth of the Ozark Highlands Trail Association\, will be held November 4-5\, 2023. \nIf you want to be a part of 2023’s special occasion\, there are multiple locations from which to start your hike. However\, the spot closest to where everyone will camp on Hare Mountain is the Hare Mountain/Morgan Field Trailhead (can be located on the Ozark Highlands Trail—West map available in OHTA’s online store). From there it is a mere 1.7 mile hike to the top. \nThis year’s Hike In will include a potluck dinner on Saturday evening\, so please remember to bring something tasty to contribute to the feast. In addition\, presentations will be made for the winner of the Maintainer of the Year Award\, Dawna Robinson Member of the Year Award\, and the Trail Ranger Award (a lifetime achievement award). \nThere is plenty of room to camp\, but be sure to pack in all the water you will need. Come one\, come all. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce someone who is new to hiking to the spectacular beauty of the Ozark mountains and the unparalleled experience of primitive camping.
