EXPLORE

The Ozark Highlands Trail Association (OHTA) is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1981 to build, maintain, and enjoy the Ozark Highlands Trail (OHT). When complete, the OHT will stretch 320 miles across northern Arkansas from Lake Fort Smith State Park to Lake Norfork – where it will connect to the Ozark Trail in Missouri.

Every year, dozens of people contribute thousands of hours to building and maintaining the Ozark Highlands Trail! Our volunteers make generous contributions of their time and resources to help preserve the trail for the enjoyment of future generations.

We’re all acquainted with the familiar white aluminum trail markers but take note of the occasional painted on blaze as those were used during the early building and maintaining by Tim Ernst and his pioneering group of volunteers. They’ve become scarce as storms & age has taken toll on their existence. These 2 pictured are between mm 52 & Marinoni Scenic Area.

Here's the view from Hare Mountain yesterday morning. On the way up, they suspected a bear had been flipping rocks and logs, looking for snacks. On the way back, they became certain. 🐻 (Prints were found between miles 36 and 37.)

As summer is quickly approaching, be mindful of trail conditions. Carry plenty of water out there, and protect yourself from the insects and creatures you could encounter. Any summer hikers out there?
